Manchester Children’s Events

Activities

In a city as buzzing and vibrant as Manchester, there is always something exciting going on. There are plenty of activities geared towards small children as well as those aimed to cater for the whole family. Fun days out include a visit to Heaton Park which not only boasts a superb play area but also a large animal section or, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous why not take on the challenge of a treasure hunt; run by Huntfun Manchester, this is an excellent opportunity to spend time together as a family as well as getting outdoors and learning about Manchester. If you fancy a walk on the wild side, Chester Zoo is not too far away and is one of the U.K’s best; everything from elephants and giraffes to meerkats and monkeys is on offer here and you won’t be disappointed.

Museums and Art Galleries

There are numerous art galleries and museums around Manchester, most of which are suitable for children. Many offer interactive classes and hands-on displays which help children to learn whilst also ensuring they have fun.

The Imperial War Museum North is a great opportunity for children to learn about wartime Britain and they can also enjoy dressing up and handling the artefacts on display.

The Museum of Science and Industry has an extensive collection of exhibitions and children are actively encouraged to join in activities such as making crafts and quizzes.

The Manchester Museum also has larger than life displays of everything from Egyptian mummies to dinosaurs.

The Whitworth Gallery is currently running a drop-in creative workshop for all the family every Sunday, featuring hands-on activities and interactive games.

Christmas Time

In November, catch the Christmas lights being switched on and then head down to the Christmas markets to experience a winter wonderland full of lights, toys, gifts and decorations; you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Father Christmas.

Kids Fun Ideas Show

Manchester Central (G-Mex) also hosts the annual ‘Kids Fun Ideas Show’ where companies and experts share their advice and tips on activities and games to keep your children amused. There are also classes, workshops and exhibitions featuring everything
from football and dance to art and science.

Local Community Events

Local communities often have events going on for small children and families; these are often organised by local primary schools or public libraries and are often advertised in local newspapers as well as appearing on leaflets distributed in the community. Local libraries often have a website which will have details of child-focused activities, such as story time sessions.
